In the story, the goddess Parvati creates Ganesha out of clay to protect her while she bathes.

While Parvati is away, her husband, Shiva, returns home.

Ganesha, who doesn't know who Shiva is, stops him from entering the house.

Shiva becomes enraged and beheads Ganesha. Shiva then replaces Ganesha's head with that of an elephant.

Ganesha is the son of Shiva and Parvati. He is the brother of Karthikeya, the god of war.
